Pastel is an art medium consisting of pure powdered pigment and a binder, the same as those used in oil paints, but more permanent. The color effect of pastels remains closest to the raw pigments. Pastels have been used by artists since the Renaissance. Degas, Manet, Cassatt and Toulouse-Lautrec painted with pastels. Edvard Munch’s fourth version of The Scream was completed in pastel and sold for $120M. Works are done on an acid free archival quality support and properly mounted and framed under art glass. The tooth of the sanded paper holds the pastel fragments. Light bounces through these captured fragments and creates a crystallized effect. This gives pastel paintings their unique appearance setting them apart from any other medium.
